At exactly 12:33 AM last Friday, our daughter turned 1 year old. My husband and I high-fived, kissed and congratulated each other with, “Well done to us! We made it to 1 year!”
What a milestone indeed. It has been a roller coaster ride since having a baby with sleepless nights, constant feedings, nappy changes, growth spurts, mommy brain, breastfeeding and the many firsts: first time to change a diaper (believe it or not!), bathe a baby, use a stroller, eat solids, go to the zoo, go for a hike, swim in the lake and most recently, first birthday…and birthday cake.
We celebrated our baby’s first birthday with a small party of close friends. After singing the traditional “Happy Birthday” song to our daughter and blowing out her birthday candle, it’s funny to see that my baby kind of realized that all the people were there for her.
Just when I thought that’s the only highlight of the party, my husband surprised me with a bouquet of flowers- for celebrating one year of motherhood. That was really sweet and the flowers were absolutely beautiful.
So, since I did not get a gift for my husband, I am dedicating this blog post to him.
All I want to say is, I’m really lucky that my hubby is so hands-on with our daughter and that he has this strong bond with her. I see it every time he comes home from work, my daughter will shout, “Tadeeh!!!” in excitement and will already want to be carried by him. He also gives our daughter a bath most of the time and at one point we used to keep tabs on who can give her a cry-free bath. He won that one for sure.
My hubby also helps a lot at home. He does most of the cleaning. I once said to a friend that it’s great that I can leave all our recyclable bottles and cans by the sink and they just magically disappear the next day.
It also helps that he understands that I need a break every now and then. He can easily step in to take care of our daughter so I can have a few hours of me time regardless of how I spend it. No questions asked except for when. And when I’m actually out, he also sends me reassuring text messages like, “We’re ok here. Stay out as long as you like. Or “Enjoy baby, you should do this every week!”
And lastly, as many of you don’t know, apart from being a mad scientist (kidding), chairmaker and innovator, my husband is also musically talented. He can make up songs as fast as a fart can come out of his butt. I always tease him that he’s in the wrong profession- he should be making musicals. Ironically, he does not like musicals. But anyway, here are a sample of his songs that our dear Tala had to endure (and still enduring):
The Diaper Change Song
(to the tune of the Beatles’ “Yesterday”)
Diaper change
Tala needs another diaper change
That is why the baby smells so strange
Oh Tala needs a diaper change
Ready for more?
It’s the Baby!
(to the tune of The Village People’s “In the Navy”)
It’s the baby being messy eating soup
It’s the baby who made another poop
It’s the baby who made a poop and fart
It’s the baby, it’s the baby
It’s the baby who is smiling every day
It’s the baby who poops and farts away
It’s the baby
It’s the baby
It’s the baby
And if you’re an 80’s kid like him, then maybe you can sing along…
Is it Poop or Fart?
(to the tune of Modern Talking’s “Cheri Cheri Lady”)
Smelly smelly diaper when she screams I wipe her
Smelly smelly diaper is it poop or fart
(repeat as many times as needed)
And finally, here’s a bonus. A song called “Laundry detergent smells so good” – on video:

Thank for being a super daddy and hubby Patrik! Tala and I love you so much!
