Kilay is life! It’s true, don’t you think? When your eyebrows are properly groomed, the world seems like a better place. Your face gets a natural lift! Hence, life!

I don’t remember exactly when I started grooming my eyebrows but it started with plucking, then threading, onto tinting, then getting permanent make-up. I stuck with permanent make-up for a long time. More than 10 years I think. Then microblading came along but I stuck to my guns.

It wasn’t like I was not going to give microblading a chance anyway. I’m very particular when it comes to my eyebrows and all other wellness procedures/treatments so it’s not easy for me to just get out there and try out a treatment with a random provider. Permanent make-up also generally lasts longer- normally 1-2 years but mine lasts 2 to 3 years average as I really take care to avoid washing and wiping my eyebrows unnecessarily. Also as I tend to be happy with the shape of my eyebrows, I usually don’t wait til the color has really faded completely and try to go for touch-ups.

My last permanent make-up procedure was back in summer of 2016. I remember it well because that was in preparation for my wedding. I was due to get it done in 2018 but that year was really full of chaos in my life so I did not have time, then I got pregnant in 2019 so most of my beauty treatments were put on hold just to be safe.

With roughly a month left out of my 6 month maternity leave, I now slowly go and get the beauty treatments that were long overdue done. So when my go-to salon, U’nique-Personal Grooming by Demee announced that they are offering microblading services, I immediately booked for an appointment. I did not think twice as I know that the owner, eyelash queen Demee Koch, does not compromise on quality.

Procedure wise the steps for microblading are the same with permanent make-up. The Beautician:

  1. Checks the current state of the client’s eyebrows and discusses with her/him on how the eyebrows must look like after the procedure
  2. Cleans and shapes eyebrows by plucking
  3. Draws the proposed look after the procedure and explains how the color will be for client approval
  4. Performs actual microblading procedure

The entire session can last between 1 to 3 hours depending on the state of your eyebrows. Mine only lasted for over an hour as it was more focused on styling, fixing color patches and replenishing the color of my eyebrows.

Did it hurt? I typically have a high threshold for pain but I remember that I always shed involuntary tears in my past permanent makeup sessions. For this one though, I barely shed a tear. I also informed the beautician right away if the pain has increased so more topical anesthetic can be put on. You will know this by comparing how it felt during the first pass of microblading vs the succeeding passes (the beautician can work on specific areas of your eyebrows more than once as needed).

At the end of the procedure, I was very happy and felt as if order has been restored. My eyebrows from looking quite faded, unkept and worn out now look very nice, maintained and natural. It definitely gave my face a wonderful lift (figuratively).

Would I do it again? Definitely. Given that it’s less invasive, less painful, less permanent (which means you can go for a different eyebrow style and shape next time without waiting 3-5yrs), and also less expensive (I’m not saying it’s cheap 😋) than permanent make-up, I’m totally convinced.

So if you’re in Zurich, go get your eyebrows done at U’nique! Not only are the actual services great, the staff are also wonderful.

I actually came with my baby (I informed them beforehand) and one of the staff, Richa took care of my daughter while I was in session. That was really nice! Thank you, Richa!

After the procedure, your eyebrows will be a little reddish but it fades in a few hours. Try not to touch it as there might be some pain (logically as anesthetic wears off). The beautician will explain the after care guidelines before you go. A touch-up will be required and can be done earliest 4 weeks after the procedure.

So there you go! Overall a very pleasant experience which convinced me to switch from permanent make-up to microblading.
